Furniture Making & Restoration Skills (Level 5)

 
Overview

This course will give participants a broad understanding of all aspects of Furniture Making and Restoration. During the course a number of field trips are organised. These give the student an opportunity to see furniture both old and modern in the context of old houses and in the process of manufacture.

Course Outline

  • Furniture & Cabinet Making
    Learning the necessary skills of 
    cabinet making for the construction of furniture
  • Restoration
    Acquiring a knowledge and appreciation of antique furniture. 
    Assessing the work necessary to restore and repair old and antique furniture
  • Upholstery
    Using both traditional and modern methods
  • Finishing & Spraying Techniques
    Preparing wood for final finish using either French polish, Varnish or oil
  • Combined Materials
    Developing creative skills to make an item of their own choice using a range of materials
  • Design
    Design and make individual pieces of furniture
  • CAD
    Drawing Skills 
    Communications 
    Work Experience

One-year full time progressing to Furniture & Restoration Skills FETAC Level 6

FETAC (NCVA): – Craft, Level 5, ACXXX

Students may participate in Leonardo Exchange Programme

On successful completion of Level 5 students may progress to Furniture Making & Restoration Skills FETAC Level 6

Students may apply to a range of Higher Education Institutions through the Higher Education Links Schemes.
